It has been two months since Dr. Vivek Murthy has been officially commissioned as the 19th U.S. Surgeon General. He has since laid out an ambitious list of priorities to build a healthier America. Reflecting back on his inauguration remarks,  these aspects were relevant to CHIL's mission:

He charges us all to build a healthier nation by building the Great American Community. At CHIL, we recognize that no child builds healthy habits on his or her own. Every person lives within a network and community that reinforces and teaches healthy or unhealthy behavior. The word community appears 19 times in his speech. He calls on everyone, not just doctors, but also city planners, employers, and community leaders to participate. At CHIL, ingrained in our mission and the makeup of our leadership staff is that health is the responsibility of all thinkers - teachers, economists and lawyers.

But while the mark of a great nation may be in how we care for our most vulnerable, the test of a strong nation is how good we are at keeping them from getting sick in the first place. - Dr. Vivek Murthy

CHIL focuses on prevention because we believe that focusing on developing healthy behaviors allows children to flourish in their education and future.

We look forward to Dr. Murthy's tenure, and continue to support his efforts to build the Great American Community for a healthier America. Read his full speech here
